In 2023, 39.4 million French people made online purchases, an increase of 500,000 people compared to the previous year. On average, each buyer placed 60 orders during the year. A large majority (88%) recognize that e-commerce has a positive impact on their daily lives, saving them time and allowing them to optimize their purchases. For those who live far from big cities, e-commerce also allows access to products that are not available locally. In addition, 93% of consumers say they are satisfied with their online shopping experiences.
Online consumers are increasingly aware of the impact of their purchases. Thus, 79% of them prefer Made in France, while 72% opt for products that meet environmental and ethical criteria. In addition, 45% of online shoppers have purchased at least one second-hand product in the last 12 months.
In 2023, France had 152,000 commercial sites, employing a total of 213,000 people. Of the sites surveyed, 38% increased their workforce this year.
The e-commerce sector in France continues to grow, registering an increase of 10.5% in 2023 compared to the previous year, reaching a turnover of 159.9 billion euros. E-commerce now represents 10% of retail trade.
65% of French e-commerce sites sell abroad, which represents an increase of 3 points compared to 2022. In addition, 69% of retailers expect their international sales to increase.
France is positioned as the second largest e-commerce market (products and services) in Europe, with a turnover of 159.9 billion euros, just behind the United Kingdom (480 billion euros) and ahead of Germany (93.6 billion euros).
